Brooklyn Grocery Store, Maarten Hof
Brooklyn Grocery Store by Maarten HofAfter I came back from a trip to New York I felt super inspired by the little storefronts in Brooklyn. I bought a little book called: Brooklyn Storefronts by Paul Lacy and the photo of "Vasquez Grocery" was my main inspiration. My main goal with this scene was to make a scene in broad daylight without any fog or dark shadows so it was harder to "cheat". I also wanted to practice my composition and color theory hence the flat on camera angle. The scene is mad
Had to give him a shot, he's got everything I need.

“As an apprentice, you do whatever needs to be done. You don’t even do a tattoo for half a year or more. They let me start by tattooing leather, tattooing myself, and my friends who let me practice on them. I was allowed to do a tiny little butterfly before getting the freedom to do what I want.” Dave Wah (Stay Humble Tattoo Company in Baltimore)

Katy explains how she became a locksmith in 1969. "It was called a correspondence course. They sent me the lessons in the mail, so I would do the lessons and send it back. For example, they would send me a lock to pick, so I’d pick the lock and send it back to them in an envelope. Then I’d receive the next lesson and assignment in the mail. There was no schedule, so we could mail it back whenever we were ready, until we finished the course.”

While there is no formula for success, Carol has a few habits that get her going: "I run. It's all about the endorphins! We need some sort of exercise."
"You don’t have to refrigerate eggs that you get from the farmers' market, they keep well outside like this. But, if you buy eggs from the supermarket that have already been refrigerated, then you need to keep refrigerating them. You’ll find that most people are surprised to know this! It’s one of the questions we get a lot. That, and what’s the difference between white eggs and brown eggs." "For the men out there: work as hard as I do, and be positive. For the women: never let anyone tell you no. If you believe it, you can become it." - Rachel Jael Clymene Films: http://www.clymenefilms.com/ — at San Francisco, CA

"Follow your instincts, and do what makes you happy. Everyone's going to have something to say about what you should do. They'll say: "You know what you should do?!" ... You just have to take it all in, filter it, and then do what makes you happy. Of course, if you’re not making any money and not paying the bills, you have to relook the way you’re doing things, but always follow your heart." (Katie Carrin)
Spinning Tales
“People have told me that this shop should be a TV sitcom. We’ve had very spirited conversations on all sorts of things, and discussions about politics would get especially heated. That’s one thing I really miss, because we used to do it every week.”
