New Chicago 51 6 string lap steel in black walnut, with body shape based on a Valco model from the 1940s. 635mm scale. Strung 13-56 for open E (though I like to drop the top string to C# for E6). I think this is the best sounding steel I've built to date...

Superlight? Not just the blonde finish, but also the weight - just under 2.3kg (a fraction over 5lbs - about the same or a bit less than my lap steels…) with a solid, not chambered, body and slim neck. This choice of timbers gives a 30-35% reduction in overall weight compared to my usual walnut/cherry or sipo mahogany construction without compromising tone or playability; the tuners, too, are among the lightest available ( same as I use on the lap steels).
