Design by Vitsœ
Dieter Rams gave his famous 1976 speech titled ‘Design by Vitsœ’, in New York. Rams asked designers – indeed, everyone – to take more responsibility for the state of the world around them. Ever since, Rams called for “an end to the era of wastefulness” and to consider how we can continue to live on a planet with finite resources if we simply throw everything away. This has come to be seen as industrial sustainability. Here at Vitsœ, we prefer to call this the common sensical approach.

Dieter Rams’s 1955 sketch
This sketch from 1955 is the first proposal by a 23 year old Dieter Rams for modernising the interiors at Braun’s Kronberg headquarters. On the back wall of the boldly modern scheme can be seen the very first notion of a track-based, wall-mounted storage system. Four years later, in 1959, Vitsœ was founded. Good ideas take time, and last longer for it. #vitsoearchive #vitsoe #vitsœ #dieterrams #modularfurniture #design #industrialdesign #gooddesign
