This is known as a Singer Parlor Cabinet for treadle sewing machines. The machine folds down and is completely hidden inside. When sewing machines first became a household item, people were very proud of them and displayed them prominently in their homes. However, later on, the well-to-do didn't want anyone to know that they HAD to do their own sewing and didn't send it out to a seamstress. These cabinets could be passed of as furniture.
