Gold ring, 17th century, India, Deccan, Max. Diam.: 1 1/8 in. (2.9 cm) Diam. of bezeL. 3/4 in. (1.9 cm). The flower-shaped bezel of this ring is flanked by two birds resting on scroll brackets. Birds of this form are popular motifs found on South Indian jewelry, often seen in symmetrical decoration similar to this example, but also appear as engraved precious stones. The physiology of these birds suggests that they are most likely parrots which are prevalent in Deccani painting.
