Distinguishable by its ‘screw’ like appearance and measuring 132.2m high, ‘Survarnabhumi’ International Airport’s control tower holds the title of the world’s tallest control tower. When the airport officially opened in September 2006, it also broke other world records. At 563,000 square metres, the passenger terminal became the largest in the world and the airport also features the world’s longest runway measuring 75.3 metres wide and a staggering 4,000 metres long.

The new Visual Control Room (VCR) at Thumrait Airbase is a large, 24 sided structure, attired with a conical parapet encompassing a roof dome to emulate a jewel in the crown of the new Tower. The design, colours and material selection give recognition to both local culture and architecture. The VCR is a complete bespoke design created by Tex ATC to fulfill Royal Air Force of Oman and Ministry Of Defence Sultanate of Oman exact specification requirements.

The most testing requirement for the RAF Coningsby Visual Control Room (VCR) was a high sound attenuation value due to the resident RAF Typhoon aircraft twin afterburning design. Tex ATC’s Security Clearance for working on Military projects allowed us to obtain the acoustic footprint of the Eurofighter in order to identify the frequencies that driving attenuation when selecting our material composition for the VCR envelope.

The new terminal and runway at Muscat International Airport, the largest airport in Oman, has a capacity of 12 million passengers per annum. This prestigious project is one of the largest that TEX ATC have been involved in; the tower being 97.6 metres high and with 100 square metres of floor space within the VCR.

TEX ATC’s construction of the state of the art new control room at Manchester Airport began in the late summer of 2012 and completed in early 2013. The impressive control room is Britain’s second tallest after Heathrow Airport.

The construction of Kano International Airport’s new Air Traffic Control Tower required a swift, value engineered Visual Control Room solution. The project constraints leant toward one of our “off the shelf” designs that can be delivered in flat pack form and then either installed by client resource with our Project Management or fulfilled by Tex ATC as a turnkey delivery. Tex ATC’s Multi-View 850 VCR was selected, offering a floor area of approximately 50 Sqm.

Having successfully delivered the Visual Control Room for RAF Coningsby and attained the stringent specification requirements set, the UK MOD directly approached Tex ATC to work collaboratively with the Corp of Royal Engineers in the delivery of an ambitious and challenging project to construct a New Air Traffic Control Tower at Camp Bastion, Afghanistan.
