Konark Sun Temple was devoted to the Sun-God, chiefly known as Biranchi-Narayan, and the area in which it is situated was called as Arka-Kshetra and padma-kshetra. As per folklore, son of Lord Krishna, Samba, was struck with leprosy because of curse of Lord Krishna himself. Samba underwent callous atonement at Mitravana for 12 years, near the convergence area of Chandrabhaga River with the sea flowing at Konark. http://www.guiddoo.com/
