Rajmata Krishna Kumari was the last reigning Maharani of Marwar-Jodhpur; her husband was H.H. Raj Rajeshwar Maharajadhiraj Shri Hanwant Singh. He married thrice, she was his first wife, in 1948 his second wife was HH Maharani Sundra Devi (formerly Sandra McBryde). His third wife was the actress of the 1920's Zubeidaa Begum. He died on 26 January 1952 in a plane crash with Zubeidaa.

Upon exile to France in 1924, she was sought by the Shah of Persia (Reza Shah Pahlavi), King Fuad I of Egypt, and by Prince Azam Jah of Hyderabad (whom she married in Nice, France in 1931) as a bride. She lived between Hyderabad and London where she died on 7 Feb 2006.

Something about this with the sitter and the setting really strikes me. I'm sure the setting was just a painting (so faded) but it... fits the atmosphere.
