From beginning to end, here is the full process painting the Bouguereau eye study compressed into 14-ish seconds. It’s as close to Bionic Woman powers as I’ll ever get 💨 #portraitpainter #kansascityartist #kcartist #contemporaryrealism #oilportraitpainting #realismtoday #oilpaintingartist #artrealism #realistpainter #oilpainting #portraitart #eyestudy #paintingprocess #paintingprogress #howtopaint #bouguereau #classicalart #favoritethings
I’m close to finishing this portrait so I thought I’d share progression highlights. I wish all portraits were as fun to paint as this one. It never fails that whenever I think I have the hang of something in painting, I’ll do a painting that goes terribly wrong, which happened a couple nights ago trying a different process. I am still deciding whether to try and save it or move on. Painting mistakes are as important as painting successes. It’s all a part of learning and growing as an arti...
Here are a few shots from a painting I did during a class with @valentineben - it was one of 5 paintings in the class that were initially painted in one sitting. I decided to take this one a little further and am still unsure if I’m finished with it yet. I see a few things I could fix and I didn’t add all of his glorious highlights to his hair. Ben worked with @howardlyonart for a reference of this young man. If you’re looking for some nice reference packs to do studies from. I highly recom...
This painting was the first portrait we did where we painted two grisaille layers and then a color layer on top. I was going to move on from this dude, but the caped crusader kept calling me back. I played around with the background a bit and added more color where needed. I’m taking two classes from @valentineben and am feeling a little behind on all of my projects. Mostly I’m behind on laundry and a social life, but at least I’m getting my painting done. It’s been so hot and sticky o...
This is a recent study I did after Abbott Handerson Thayer’s 1887 painting titled “Angel”. Thayer was an American artist who painted a wide variety of subjects. He was known to paint academically idyllic figures, yet he was very experimental with his techniques using dirt, brooms, and scrapers to add texture. The full painting with the angel wings looks so simple, but his execution was quite complex due to his unconventional ways of making marks to add texture and interest. What is so u...
I wasn’t happy with my last effort on this portrait, so Jame’s back on the easel once again for some small adjustments. My iPhone really wanted his skin to be yellow. It has some yellow ochre mixed in, but it’s certainly not over the top in person. I’m much happier with the results now, but I reserve the right to bring him back for more. 😁 #painter_daily #portraitart #portraitartist #contemporaryrealism #portraitpainting #portraitpainter #realismtoday #artrealism #realistpainter #figurativ...
This is the third portrait out of five from the allaprima class I’m taking with @valentineben . The class has flown by and I can’t believe we only have one portrait left to do. It’s been a fantastic class as always. These classes are especially challenging as they are completed in one sitting. Well, I should say they are challenging for me because I like taking my time and painting super slow. Some of these portraits will get more layers because it’s just too tempting not to go back and fi...
It’s fun to look back on projects. Especially the projects that started out really rough. No - I don’t know what I was thinking. #portraitart #portraitartist #contemporaryrealism #portraitpainting #portraitpainter #realismtoday #artrealism #realistpainter #figurativeart #OilPainting #Oilportraitpainting #art_realism_ #artdaily #art_portrait #oilpaintingartist #paintanyway #kcartist #kansascityart #kcmo #madeinkc #representationalart #finishstrong

This is a work in progress. Sometimes the mock up before a painting looks good, but then something changes when I start painting on canvas. As with my recent painting of a woman with red hair, I keep changing my mind on what she is wearing and the background. The painter in me wants to paint with more compressed values, but the designer in me wants the drama of high contrast. So stay tuned for changes. I think the designer is going to win this one. #painter_daily #portraitart #portra...
The most fun thing I did last year was auditing a bunch of online classes by @valentineben . My favorite thing to do is learn and my second favorite thing to do is paint. I get a two for one in these classes. I love watching the live sessions, although I find it impossible to paint along. When I paint, I forget to look and listen to what is going on. I can always watch the replay, which I do, but I pay more attention during the live session. A new class is starting on Saturday and will run ...
