Study after Thayer
This is a recent study I did after Abbott Handerson Thayer’s 1887 painting titled “Angel”. Thayer was an American artist who painted a wide variety of subjects. He was known to paint academically idyllic figures, yet he was very experimental with his techniques using dirt, brooms, and scrapers to add texture. The full painting with the angel wings looks so simple, but his execution was quite complex due to his unconventional ways of making marks to add texture and interest. What is so u...
Shelley Hanna Art on Instagram: "I missed TBT, so TBF will have to do. This painting was from a class earlier this year with Ben Valentine. We started with a grisaille for the first layer, which is a fantastic way to learn how to paint portraits. As the saying goes, “when you get your values right, you can commit crimes with color.” Getting values correct is always key when learning how to paint realism. Figuring out value via grayscale is a helpful step in the pursuit of representational art. Of course there are chroma mysteries to be solved to emulate values later on, but starting with grisaille is often considered to be fundamental to learning classical painting. I’m still learning all of this stuff and can find it to be overwhelming, but fortunately there are many artists who are
Richard Edward Miller
This is one of my favorite paintings at the Nelson. I love the bold saturated colors, thick impasto, and the subtle rendering of the facial features. The name of the painting is “At the Window” and was painted by the American artist Richard Edward Miller around 1911. According to the Nelson Atkins museum label, “Richard E. Miller merged academic techniques with a more expressive style honed during summers spent in Monet’s sphere in Giverny beginning in 1906. Although the extent of his relat...

This is nearly every painting that was on my easel in 2024. A few didn’t make the cut because I’m in vacation mode and didn’t want to spend all my time editing. I think I crammed 45 paintings into this 6 second video. 2024 was a great year for learning and I think I’ve made progress in the areas I had hoped for. But the fantastic thing about painting is there is always SO MUCH MORE to learn and I’m really looking forward to getting back on the easel in 2025. #artrealism #oilportraitpainti...

Peter Paul Rubens painted a Portrait of Baldassare Castiglione after Raphael’s original* — but why? While there’s no direct record of his motivation, we can make an educated guess: 🤝Like Castiglione, Rubens was a diplomat. As a court painter and political envoy, Rubens lived the ideals of “The Book of the Courtier”, a Renaissance guide to grace, intellect, and power written by Castiglione. 🎨 Rubens deeply admired Raphael. He studied and interpreted Raphael’s work throughout his career, ab...

This has been a portrait I have had on and off my easel over the past year and a half. I have more I want to do on it, but today seemed like a good day to show his progress. Maybe he’ll be finished in another year and a half. 🎩 #portraitart #portraitartist #contemporaryrealism #portraitpainting #portraitpainter #realismtoday #artrealism #realistpainter #figurativeart #OilPainting #Oilportraitpainting #oilpaintingartist #paintanyway #kcartist #kansascityart #kcmo #representationalart #lin...
