After Sir Thomas Lawrence
Some progress pics from a recent portrait study after Sir Thomas Lawrence. She may still get a few tweaks here and there, but overall I’m happy with how this came together. And in case you’re wondering about the blue drawing, I like to use watercolor pencils to draw my portraits out on the panel. They are cleaner than charcoal and I have plenty of them floating around the studio. #classicalart #classicalportrait #portraitpainting #portraitpainter #portraitpaintings #kansascityartist #rea...
After Bouguereau
This is layer two of the Bouguereau study I posted last week from the facial features class I’m taking with Ben Valentine. Bouguereau is tough because he painted so perfectly, but it’s worth the effort to try. This is where the second layer magic happens. I remember taking a class with Ben a couple years ago where he demonstrated how adding layers to a painting can create a luminous and realistic quality. I was hooked from that moment. #portraitpainter #portraitpaintings #classicalart #bou...

She wasn’t royalty. She wasn’t nobility. And yet, Leonardo da Vinci painted her with the same depth and intrigue as his most famous works. But why? A few clues… She is Cecilia Gallerani, the teenage muse of the Duke of Milan. The ermine isn’t just a pet—it’s a secret symbol of her name. BUT - was it also a symbol of the Duke, who was a member of the Order of the Ermine? Coincidence? I don’t think so. DaVinci revolutionized the medieval portrait by introducing motion and psychology. The s...
This is a nose study from facial features class with Ben Valentine (did you know he started posting videos on his YouTube channel? Check it out). Our model was a detail from a white marble sculpture and the goal was to paint the nose in color, so it was a fun exercise overall. I had to include the eye and mustache to keep the nose company. What do you think of this statuesque shnoz? #portraitpainter #portraitpaintings #classicalart #nosestudy #paintingstudy #kansascityartist #kcartist ...

This is all of the most recent work I’ve had on my easel over the past couple of months. Most of them are studies, but I’m starting to work on other ideas for later this year. We’ll have to see if my studies pay off 🙂 #oilpaintingoncanvas #oilportraits #oilportraitpainting #portraitpainter #portraitpaintings #portraitpainters #contemporaryrealism #classicalart #artstudies #paintingprocess #paintingprogress #kansascityartist #kcartist #kcart #representationalart #representationalpainting #r...

I was only going to paint the eye for this study, but then I wanted to paint the tiny ear, the luminous skin, and the mouth. So it would have been weird to paint all of that and leave the nose off. This is after Sir Frederic Leighton‘s late 1870’s painting titled “Lucia”, which is at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. I couldn’t find much information about this painting, but I did notice when I started painting that it most likely was modeled after a Greek sculpture. I wasn’t interested ...
All of the studies from Ben Valentine’s 6 week facial features class in 6 seconds. I have to admit that painting noses isn’t my number one pick, but every time I do paint them they seem to be a fan favorite.
