This piece is one of a group of six similar pieces which may have been samples made for the export trade. The gold embroidery (zardozi) used metal thread and pieces of the iridescent wing-cases (elytra) of the beetle Sternocera aequisignata (family Buprestidae, Jewel Beetles).

Very skilled hands at the Hobart School for Mussulman Girls in Madras used zardozi and the wings of Jewel Beetles to create this piece which was then shipped to England in 1882

This gown has cool unique styling with the all black base, varying levels and layers of tulle on the bottom, and metallic gold embellishments on the bodice. I wish the website had more details about where to get it!
