This exclusive programme investigates the inspiration and creative responses, of selected artists, to individual works from the Robert Young Antiques Collection, and re-contextualises them in a contemporary language.

Holly is a London-based artist, working predominantly with print and audio. Much of her work looks at ways in which memory and narrative shape collective histories. She is interested in tracing how memory fragments form and regroups to enable shifting understandings of identity – a definition of self in time and place. Bound up in this lies an interest in recording-mechanisms, documents, evidence, and processes of editing; concerns rooted around a commitment to amplifying quiet histories.

Human beings are creatures defined by making – by our use of tools and objects, by our creation of changing worlds to live in and with. And, as much as we are marked by the objects which form the landscape of our lives, our touch marks them. We leave our trace everywhere: in craftwork and patch-ups and notches and scratches. We are witnessed by our places and things in this way. Antiques survive us, witness us, and express us. Their stories are ours, too.
We inscribe things with memory. A simple stone or vase or chair can become a symbol of a person, or a portal to another time in our lives. We can re-enter the world of our childhood when we hold its things again; we can feel the presence of a lost loved one through the things they loved. Together, our things form an extended self, arriving and leaving throughout our lifetimes as our needs and desires and traits shift. They absorb us and express us, and often survive us.
‘Gently as our days bite’ is an act of listening to eleven objects – of hearing what memories might be murmuring in their material, of following the tangled threads of their possible stories, and of reading their characters, forged between the tenderness and brutality of human time and touch.

As part of Josh’s project he has been developing an accompanying artist book. In an attempt to make structures that transcend the everyday, Josh Wright dissects and reconfigures familiar domestic objects, making anthropomorphised forms that open up wider questions around contemporary domesticity and the role of the home today.
Initially taking inspiration from an antique Prattware Cottage Money Box from the RYA Collection as a basis for his exploration, Josh will create a sculptural expression of the home as something that is desired and often unattainable for young people in London; whilst integrating the language, architecture and promotional material employed by many of the modern building firms that are encroaching the Battersea area around the Robert Young Antiques Gallery.

"Home-Time" was the first in a series of collaborative initiatives with emerging artists and pioneered by Erin Hughes. Home-Time" combines a collection of the artist’s "postcard" paintings, set within a collage created from home improvement materials, together with antique vernacular works selected from the Robert Young Antiques Collection. The work attempts to function as a lens through which to look closely at our implied domesticated desires.
RCA Graduate Erin Hughes is our Contemporary Collaborations Curator, having originally worked with us at the Gallery, Erin was also the first artist to create a collaborative installation with us.
