Here's a first look at the engineered version of the Roccbox Wood Burner in action. Our natural 'dual ignition' design is working beautifully, the stripes and length of the flame exceeded expectations from a prototype wood burner. We'll most likely adjust the angle of the deflector and add a new feature to further improve the stone temperature (which, for the record reached 350 degrees within our target time period). Despite looking pretty 'raw' this burner was actually one of the most successful designs (hence why it has been used so much) - We can't say much about what goes on inside it but we can say that it produces an incredibly hot flame. Patrick, our in-house engineer fed 30 people with 50 pizzas during testing - that's hot.

A sneaky look at one of the Roccbox burner prototypes. Based on the rocket stove theory, the Roccbox burner will use a unique proprietary forced airflow and double ignition system enabling it to generate a gas-like 600 degree (C) flame from wood alone - this will allow the oven to heat up to 400 degrees within just 12 minutes!

This experiment by Patrick, our in-house engineer is looking at the effect of 'natural draw' when different sized/shaped flue attachments are attached (albeit rather ruggedly) to the MK4 burner prototype. Although we can't share the results of these tests we can say that a beautiful rolling flame has been achieved, essential for authentic neapolitan Pizza cookery.

Roccbox has to give the user the upmost control over heat-flow. Different food requires different temperatures so these air-flow control tabs were designed from scratch to solve this problem. After receiving the first prototype we've decided to change the heat control method to a safer, simpler function. Our next product iteration will demonstrate this in action!

1st of August 2014 was a BIG day at Roccbox HQ. The first production prototype arrived directly from our incredibly talented engineers in China. We planned on getting the product made in the UK because we fully believe in British manufacture, however, we had to make this product affordable, so we worked with an agency to source an ISO certified factory overseas that was inline with our ethical standards. We'll be building a page that explains all of our environmental and ethical policies…

Patrick and the team had to test multiple wood types and cut sizes in order to accurately design the size of the hopper inlet.

An essential stage in the development of Roccbox has been the tough, but essential cooking floor. The key for us was to develop a stone mix that retained and absorbed intense heat like a large fixed wood oven but then cooled down in a sensible time for transportation - even more important was it's weight, so a special mix has been developed. Here's a shot of Tom using a laser thermometer to test the heat retention properties of the latest iteration of the special Roccbox stone floor.

Another burner prototype - one of the first designs where battery power was considered. The unusual dish on the top was used as a base for pots & pans prior to the ovens shell development - a test of theory so to speak. Sadly, this burner will forever be a memory as few aspects have been rolled forwards into subsequent designs.
