Genre Etchings

For more than fifty of his etchings Rembrandt used scenes from everyday life. They reflect his keen interest in displaying street figures like vagrants, charlatans and street musicians. This kind of performances is traditionally referred to as 'genre'. Especially at the beginning of his career Rembrandt made many etchings with genre scenes. Some performances take place in the darkness of night. Such nocturnal scenes were a specialty of the Dutch graphic artists.
