30th June; Bramble. Leaves are good for caterpillar larvae, and of course they come with the promise of delicious blackberries later in the season.

29th June; Hosta. Hopeless if you have a problem with snails and slugs. As an organic gardener with an aversion to slug pellets, I find that the right position in the garden is the trick. These are growing in a thicket populated by birds, which seem to keep the snail population down. In more open areas of the garden they just get demolished.

28th June - lysimachia punctata - Garden Loosestrife. Spreads rather like mint, so does need to be kept in check from time to time.

27th June; Pelargonium. Drought tolerant and good for cutting, making it a good choice for pots. Never needs watering, even in the hottest of summers.

26th June - Philadelphus. Sweetly scented, perhaps one of my favourite garden shrubs at this time of year. Can be pruned back hard after flowering.

25th June; Purple Toadflax. This self seeds with ease, so once you've got some you won't ever be short again, but I'm very fond of it. It's good for pollinators, has a long flowering season, sculptural, slightly silvery leaves and is great as a cut flower.

24th June; Vetch. Filling the hedgerows, this wild pea looks lovely among the birds foot trefoil and honeysuckle.

23rd June - St John's Wort. Another shrub well valued for its medicinal properties, this self seeds like a weed, but makes a useful, albeit fairly unexciting, addition to the garden. The berries go well in flower arrangements later in the season.

21st June; Astrantia. Much loved by pollinators, beautiful in the borders or as a cut flower. Divides easily in the spring or autumn, and bushes out to form a good clump, this is another favourite garden flower of mine. And happy in our heavy clay soil, which is always a bonus.

19th June; Cistus- rock rose. A good choice for dry environments, as it is drought tolerant, with a lovely honey scent. In deep pink and white.

18th June - Evening Primrose. Valued for its medicinal properties. If happy it will self seed. A sculptural plant that is good for pollinators, each flower lasting just one day.

17th June - Sambucus Nigra. An ornamental sport of the wild Elder, we've two different varieties of this pink flowering version, one with finely cut black leaves, the other with more traditional leaf shape.
