signs in the city

Throwing open my hotel window in New York I saw mysterious chalk markings covering the road 9 floors down; they seemed like cave drawings thrust to the surface of the city from the earth’s deep memory below. I was in the same room the following year but the marks had vanished into the history of Park Avenue S. That particular spot has been recorded by me in these paintings as tribute to the millions of human beings who have walked there through millennia, long before Park Avenue existed.
