Frogfish typically live on the ocean floor around coral or rock reefs. They are stocky and lumpy in shape with large mouths and prickly skin. The species comes in a wide range of colors and textures. They rely on their colorful and textured skin to blend in to their environment to both hide from predators and avoid detection by prey. They can even change their coloration in a process that takes around a week.
They are members of the anglerfish family. Atop their head is a fishing pole like spine that derives from the dorsal fin. The fishing pole, or lure, comes tipped with a fleshy “bait” to attract prey. Frogfish are not the best swimmers. They rarely move at all, but when they do, they will use their pectoral fins like legs or paddles, walking around their habitat.
