Hovis Bread and Flour is iconic in the UK and the 1973 'Boy on the Bike' was a popular Hovis TV advert for many years and voted Britains' favorite ad of all time. The company was started in 1886 by Richard "Stoney" Smith.The name was coined by a London student in a competition to find a trading name for their patent flour which was rich in wheat germ. Herbert Grime won when he coined the word from the Latin phrase hominis vis – "the strength of man".
