Japanese Pottery Crane by Great Person of Cultural Merit, Rokubei Kiyomizu (1901-1980)*, 10.2"x5.7"x3.5", sold eBay, 11/1/15 $68 *made by one of the greatest potters of Kyo ware,the 6th Rokubei Kiyomizu about 50 years ago. Great potter, designated as Person of Cultural Merit from Japanese Government in 1976. A pair of earthenware Manchurian cranes, modeled and decorated naturalistically, each feather carefully delineated. Studied closely by the artist, his choice of vivid red, brown and black enamels add to their “alive” quality. Ito Tozan I. Tomobako. Height 4.25"; length, 8.5". Meiji Period. (For a similar okimono by the same artist, see “Far Eastern Art at Spink”, p.49.).
