Jo Lee goes to live with Fourth Uncle, his father's brother, in a fishing village in California. They journey out on a sampan, a type of boat originating from China, every day to fish and collect shrimp.
In 1981 I went to Hong Kong and fell in love with Chinese Junk Sailing Boats, never dreaming that I'd own one someday. The Chinese came over to Monterey in junks like these, across the ocean. in 1851 they started the fishing industry here. When land developers burned down their village (near where the Aquarium is today) and Macabee beach, they scattered and now there are people wanting to honor and gather them back again. There is a cabin at Point Lobos which has photos of some of them.
