Frank Frazetta (1928-2010) self portrait. By the 1950s the pulps were dead and with them an era of adventure painting, replaced by paperback covers of noire realism or ugly Modernism. But a few illustrators wouldn't let the lush romance of past decades fade away. Frazetta in particular inspired the baby boomers of the 60's in a revival of N.C. Wyeth-style adventure painting centered around science fiction and fantasy that has grown into a permanent fixture of our lives. -E.N.
