(Paralympics 1) Jessica Long, a bilateral below-the-knee amputee, won the 2007 Sullivan Award and was named USA Swimming's Disability Swimmer of the Year. She began swimming competitively in 2002. She won three gold medals at the 2004 Paralympic Games. #Inspiration
Two UK cheery amputees of WW1 smile for the camera. Posed photos like this populated many publications in the immediate postwar years to underline the government's supposed rehabilitation efforts. One fact that remained little mentioned though was that those who survived their wounds did not receive any pension, save very limited "special" cases.
