Africa | Floor rug from Gafsa, Tunisia | ca. 1930 - 70 | Wool; interlocking tapestry woven | Kilims from Gafsa in central Tunisia are famous for their brightly coloured, bold geometric patterns arranged in panels and executed in the interlocking-tapestry weave. Though many motifs are repeated throughout a piece, they are never used in exactly the same colours or interpretation. Rows of marching camels (common beasts of burden in this area) are a signature of the Gafsa style.
