My lungs were burning and my feet felt as if I had stepped on multiple razor blades. Both feet were covered in blisters. After applying some bandages, I gritted my teeth and went on… step by step, by little slow-paced step.
I reached the summit about five hours later. Absorbing the magnificent landscape all around me with every fibre of my being I knew it had all been worth it. This was a sight and a feeling of sweet exhaustion and accomplishment to remember.

Writing about four of the most intense years of my life. My mind is filled with images and emotions, heaven and hell, Jekyll and Hyde… it was a fabulous roller coaster ride for while it lasted. Amazing encounters. Never felt more happy, never more unhappy. Exponential growth and breathlessness.

Searching far away was necessary for me to learn, grow and begin to know myself, to appreciate what had been there for me all along. Zurich, with all my friends and family whom I love and care for is my home and always will be, no matter where I go. In many ways, it is time to come home. Knowing this, I can feel something deep within me finally settling into a state of contentment. W.B. Pitkin said, “Life begins at forty.” Maybe, in a very profound way, for me it truly does.

The last 10 years of nomadic life have brought me to three places starting with "Ma": the Maldives, Macau, and now Malta. These names have sort of blurred together in my mind. You will find me sitting in a Maltese restaurant, asking the waitress, "So, what are your Maldivian specialties today?" Or I'll take a cab and say, "Ah, Macauan traffic is really bad today, isn't it?" Nevertheless, I do realize where I am: in Malta, my third “Ma”. And, as we say in Germany, all good things come in…

My friends had amazed me with their frequent visits and heartfelt gifts. I had received flowers, poems, a pink stuffed animal pig, and most importantly an overwhelming amount of love and support. As the little pig watched over me I slowly came to through a very thick fog. I instinctively looked down - and all I felt was relief and happiness. Step by step the walls of my life long prison began to crumble...

Day 3 at ‪#‎LBF‬ was just as intimidating as day one. I tried approaching big publishing houses to get email addresses from them. I ventured into a big hall filled entirely with literary agencies. There especially, the fair felt like an old-fashioned movie scene of the New York stock market, with frantic stock brokers hurrying to and fro. I gave up talking to any agents after the first three I approached looked at me as if I had just murdered their mother.

We kept blinking at each other until, one day, he was gone. Instead, other mysterious creatures took his place. The oceans. A neverending source of wonder and, for me, a lifelong love affair. I think, I was able to deal with the transgender-related issues in my life in a reasonably positive manner because I saw them in perspective to everything else that was happening. (By the way, the picture shows me nineteen years ago when I was twenty-four.) Brazenly put, my life was a “shit-storm”, and in relation to all else, being a transgender man was just one of my bigger problems. But, the more I survive, the more I know we can survive anything, except, of course, our inevitable death.

Being a snorkel guide in the Maldives in 2006. Gayoom, the captain behind me, was one of the kindest souls I ever met. Always a kind word, always a smile, always a hand on someone's shoulder to lift their spirits. I was a lucky man with such good company and a turquoise ocean around us.
