Nishime; a humble Japanese Vegetable Stew, is a New Years staple for many households in Hawaii. There are probably as many different Nishime recipes as there are Families, and you are sure to find Nishime at almost any New Years "spread" in Hawaii.
Nishime A traditional Japanese vegetable stew sometimes prepared with either pork or chicken. A very comforting dish you will typically find at households to celebrate special occasions. A sure find at any okazuya-type restaurant. Similar to the Chinese Jai, the ingredients have different meanings for joy, happiness, prosperity and cleansing. We are fortunate here that we are able to find the many Japanese vegetables year round.
Sukiyaki is a type of dish prepared by simmering beef and vegetables in Warishita (a blend of sugar, soy sauce, Japanese sake, and Mirin[type of rice wine]). It is one of the popular hot pot dishes in Japan.
