In scenes recalling antiquity, two panels on the lid of this casket show erotes (nude children), fighting (left) and playing music (right). The style of the animals represented on the four sides suggests that the carving was done by Italian artists drawing on Byzantine models
Medieval, approx. AD 1325-75 Paris, France. Ivory mirror case which housed metal mirror depicting a scene of hunting with hawks. Falconry was common in Medieval art and was an expression of courtly love. The scenes on the case were relative to the level of society and the dragons flanking each corner were a common decoration for the period.
