Chimney Sweep, November 7, 1931 The chimney sweep shown here is Councillor Tom Brooks, who continued to sweep chimneys while mayor of Bethnal Green. The Brooks family had a substantial chimney sweeping business working all over London and Tom, who lived in Brick Lane for 40 years, combined this with serving as a councillor for 28 years and as mayor three times. As a supporter of the temperance movement, he was responsible for moving the Sunday market from the northern end of Brick Lane.
