An antique terracotta planter rectangular in form with good internal depth and made from a high-fired yellow clay. The decoration is neoclassical in style with anthemion centred scrolling foliage on the sides and lion masks at each end. Although not apparently stamped, this planter was probably made by J Armitage and Son who established the Wharncliffe Fireclay Works at Deepcar near Sheffield in 1850 and produced some decorative goods as well as more utilitarian bricks and tiles throughout…
