The Book of Negroes by Lawrence Hill Assigned reading from a friend. Beautiful historical fiction about a young woman's life through slavery, "freedom," and resettlement in Sierra Leone. The title and then heft of the book were off putting at first, but I'm so glad I read it!
Once the western United States, it is now home to the Republic. Born into an elite family, June is a prodigy. Born into the slums, Day is the most wanted criminal. June and Day have no reason to cross paths until June's brother, Metias, is murdered and Day is the prime suspect. Day is in a race for survival, while June seeks to avenge Metias's death and the two uncover the truth of what has really brought them together, and the lengths their country will go to keep secrets.
