Recruitment poster Manchester City Police circa 1964

A Manchester City Police recruitment poster. For many years recruitment was a major issue for police forces. Long hours and poor pay made the service an unpopular career choice and much effort was put into finding new officers. We think this poster dates to the 1950s. www.gmpmuseum.co.uk

Greater Manchester Police took these series of images way back in 1976. They formed part of a recruitment drive and were to accompany a short film about the appeal of a career in policing. It may seem strange, especially in this age of very limited police recruitment, but getting people to join the service was difficult at this time. For many years the Force had a large recruitment department and spent much time and effort getting recruits to sign on the dotted line. www.gmpmuseum.co.uk

Another classic image from the ongoing digitisation of the archives of the Greater Manchester Police Museum. A police officer telephones his station from a police pillar in a local park. No doubt the call had something to do in the motorcycle in the background, which looks a little worse for wear. We have no information about which force this officer served with or the date of the image. Can you help? www.gmpmuseum.co.uk

The making of Greater Manchester Police. An early – pre enamel – helmet plate of Greater Manchester Police lies surrounded by tunic buttons of some of the forces amalgamated to form GMP, or who gave up some of their area to the Force on its creation in 1974. This image was created by one of the Force’s photographers using objects from the collection of the Greater Manchester Police Museum. http://www.gmpmuseum.com
