One of the major themes that seem to be emerging in Act I is the Role of Women. In the 1800s, women were supposed to be housewives and subordinate to their husbands. Nora, on the other hand, felt empowered in taking control of her own life when she payed for the trip to Italy, not her father. She takes pride in doing what is normally "a man's job" in that time period.
