York received both awards during the 1918 Meuse-Argonne Offensive (or the Battle of Argonne Forest) when he charged a German machine-gun nest own his own, killing 25 Germans and capturing 132 others in two separate forays. A biographical film was produced in 1941, Sergeant York, starring Gary Cooper as York.
