QU'RAN (CHINA) late 16th to early 17th c., 30 vols. (complete) Regional muhaqqaq book script, sura headings in gold on a dark blue ground; opening and closing double-page illumination for each volume with knotwork and arabesque panelling in gold and colors, frontispiece with 2 circles containing geometrical pattern of interlocking triangles and circles with diamonds containing the profession of faith above in Kufic book script, and 2 vertical lines of text in gold thuluth book script.

Upper right to lower portion on left, Surat 43 Al- Ahzab (The Confederates), v. 62-74. Medina sura (so deals life in a specific place, time & how best to build good communities). But these verses speak to Trust (as in the legal entity Trusteeship): "We did indeed offer the Trust to the Heavens & Earth & the Mountains. But they refused to undertake it, being afraid. Above & below are surah headings & verse counts in oval panels, with circular handles filled with a many-petalled rosette. Both the rosettes & the mannered Kufic of the panels have features in common with Qur’ans ordered in the 1360s by the Mamluk sultan, al-Malik al-Ashraf Sha‘ban II, for the funerary foundation of his or his mother, Khawand Barakah, in Cairo.
