This painting can be found at Holy Innocents Church in New York. The artist had just attended Mass when he noticed a young soldier kneeling at the foot of a crucifix. He was so moved that he started work on this painting.

Are we the only ones present at the liturgy? What is the liturgy? Mass attended by all the angels, saints and our blessed departed souls.

I first stumbled across the paintings of Elizabeth Mayville over five years ago and promptly shared them on Matchbook's blog. The Michigan-based painter's popularity has exploded in the years since...

"When you look at the Crucifix, you understand how much Jesus loved you then. When you look at the Sacred Host you understand how much Jesus loves you now." ~ Mother Teresa

Church Militant: God on the battlefield via the priest and the Holy Mass. The Catholic priest as warrior, and receiving the Eucharist as part of putting on the Armor of God: the Lord will fight for you; you need only be still [Ex 14:14]. We as Church need to re-learn what spiritual warfare is. The term "Church Militant" may be "unfashionable," but it is apt. St. Patrick, after all, has his famous "breastplate" prayer. Peter Kreeft recently said that we are at war for our souls.
