Pituitary Adenoma. Only rarely are pituitary tumors carcinomas. Adenomas can be secretory or nonsecretory. The hormone most often overproduced is prolactin. Any tumor growth that grows out of the pituitary can compress optic nerve tracts. Tumors can also compress or destroy hypothalamic tissue, and impair hormone production and secretion. Diagnosis is with MRI. Treatment can include correction of endocrine function, surgery, radiation or dopaminergic agonists.
