Aureus of Septimius Severus, Rome, AD196 - 197. Obverse features Caracalla, the Emperor's son with legend 'M AVR ANTONINVS CAES'. The reverse has lituus, axe, patera, jug, simpulum and sprinkler with legend 'SEVERI AVG PII FIL', son of the emperor Severus Pius. This coin was introducing Caracalla as heir to the throne.
