Eugene Sledge (1923 2001). In 1981 Sledge published With the Old Breed: At Peleliu and Okinawa a memoir of his World War II service with the United States Marine Corps. In April 2007 it was announced that With the Old Breed along with Robert Leckie's Helmet for My Pillow would form the basis for the HBO series The Pacific from the same producers as Band of Brothers.
The Battle of Okinawa, codenamed Operation Iceberg, was fought on the Ryukyu Islands of Okinawa and was the largest amphibious assault in the Pacific War of World War II. The 82-day-long battle lasted from early April until mid-June 1945.
