Fibers discharged from washing synthetic cloths are a major contributor of the plastic soup. Microplastics concentrate persistent organic pollutants that can be ingested by marine biota, introducing toxic pollutants to the food chain. Learn more about Project Mermaid
2011 Fishermen in the south of France are being paid by the EU for an unusual catch – plastic: the mounds of shopping bags in the deepest canyons of the Med, tiny plastic particles eaten by marine mammals then absorbed further along the food chain. The smallest particles are microplastics – which also have the highly poetic but sad name of mermaids’ tears.
TAKE ACTION: www.edf.org/oQf You're paying a high price for carbon pollution. As climate change continues, the financial burdens of floods, fires, rising food prices, and other climate-related problems fall heavily on taxpayers.
