Van Allen House in Oakland was built by the Van Allen family in 1748 and today is home to the Oakland Historical Society, which hosts tours and events that include a Dutch Christmas. General George Washington, accompanied by his troops, was here on July 14, 1777 on his way to West Point during the Revolutionary War.
