The rare "Little Dorrit" chain stitch was designed and marketed in the UK by Smith & Starley during the mid The proportions and mechanism of the machine are near identical to the big selling Original Express, made by the German firm of Guhl & Harbeck.

The AVON was made by The Royal Sewing Machine Company Ltd. and it is a version of the Challenge sewing machine which used Shakespear & Illston's patented shuttle movement. (Shakespear with no 'e')The Challenge had been specially commissioned by Joseph Harris in 1872 and over 2000 machines were made a year. This machine was produced around circa 1875.
