Flora Sandes - the only British woman to officially serve in WWI as a soldier although she originally she served as a nurse in the war. Sir Hector Archibald MacDonald, KCB, DSO.  "Fighting Mac" was a rare example in the British army in the Victorian age of a soldier who rose to command through the ranks.  A Colour Sergeant, he gained a commission serving in the Egyptian Army, eventually reaching the rank of Major General.  He is a hero of the battle of Omdurman, where he skillfully maneuvered his battalions to protect Kitchener's exposed flank.
