Ernest Hemingway at age 19, photo taken in Milan, Italy, 1918. After high school Hemingway enlisted in WWI. He left for the Italian front in 1918. He served in a volunteer ambulance unit. He was wounded and decorated by the Italian government with the Italian Silver Medal of Bravery. During WWII, he was at the Normandy landing, the liberation of Paris and several other key moments as a war correspondent.
Lieutenant Colonel Percy Edward Leahy - 6 Battalion, York and Lancaster Regiment Lt Col Leahy served in Gallipoli and in Egypt, before being posted to the Western Front where he was Mentioned in Despatches. He was killed by a shell, aged 35, while directing his men during a raid on German trenches on 17 July 1918. Lt Col Leahy is buried at Mazingarbe Communal Cemetery Extension.
Corporal Filip Konowal VC. Unit: 47th (British Columbia) Battalion, Canadian Expeditionary Force. Corporal Konowal was awarded the Victoria Cross at the Battle of Hill 70 in Lens, France for the following actions during 22- 24 August 1917. Konowal, who was born in Kutkivtsi, Ukraine, is the only Ukrainian recipient of the VC.
The "lovely" Primwaddle Twins, Mort and Harvey, circa 1929. Their mother's husband left after seeing the homely pair. Embittered to men, left alone to raise boys, she insisted they were girls, and got away with it home-schooling them for 17 years; until Mort learned otherwise. The teenagers murdered her in her sleep, strangled in chiffon, her eyes gouged out and replaced with doll eyes.
