The Siamese king Ananda Mahidol, Rama VIII of the Chakri dynasty, died of a gunshot wound in the Royal Palace in Bangkok. Pro-royalists in the country quickly spread rumors that members of the government assassinated the king while anti-royalists spread rumors that his brother Bhumibol assassinated him. Most likely, King Ananda committed suicide or accidentally shot himself. Nonetheless, the death resulted in a military coup that overthrew the government and restored the monarchy of Siam.
