Someone, about a century ago, sat down, plotted this, bought the materials and built it, forming minute stitches one by one. The lace was knotted thread by thread. The embroidery stitch by stitch. each pintuck, folded and stitched down by hand. Yards and yards of work. This humbles me.

French Antique Handmade lace. 18th Century Alençon Needle Lace. Rare French 18th C lace Point dAleçon This border of Alençon lace is all that is left of an 18th century silk and mother-of-pearl fan. The hand painted silk fabric s crumbling but the linen lace is in near perfect condition! Extraordinary!
