July 16, 1942: A surprise air raid test crowded about 700 pedestrians near the Parkman Bandstand on Boston Common. As many people as possible were told by police to get onto the bandstand for shelter, while hundreds of others sat on benches. Several planes flew over the city during the test to give it a realistic feel. Today, Boston Common visitors are more likely to see musicians and performers on the bandstand.
