I learned that the reason why we hurt other people is because of our own insecurities, our inadequacies, our ignorance in not knowing any better. We are limited, each and every one of us, and it's imperative for us to be aware of our limitations, and to verbalize this to the ones we love, to prevent them from personalizing our behavior.
