RUBY AND DIAMOND NECKLACE. Designed as a series of graduated cabochon rubies connected by clusters of circular- and brilliant-cut diamonds, suspending a pendant centring on a pear-shaped cabochon ruby within a border of circular- and brilliant-cut diamonds, length approximately 460mm, French assay marks.
A winter petticoat, circa 1850s. Though white is the color most often seen, winter petticoats in particular might be colored, like this one. Though it remains hard to imagine what it would be like to walk the world in so much fabric, I can easily "get" the comfort of a warm garment like this in a damp and unheated house in winter.
