Frank Wild accompanied Shackleton on four adventures to Antarctica, acting as his second-in-command as they attempted the first land crossing of the continent and later taking control of the expedition on which Shackleton died.  After the Yorkshireman's death aged 66, in South Africa in August 1939, his widow had him cremated so that his final wish of being buried next to Shackleton on the island of South Georgia in the South Atlantic might be possible.
