In the bedroom of Jeffrey Bilhuber’s Long Island manse, named Hay Fever, the famed decorator hung large swags of fabric from the ceiling to give the illusion of a 17th-century state bed. However, he covered the floor in sea-grass matting, which lends a casual air to an otherwise stately decorating scheme.

In the turn-of-the-century Paris apartment of the late designer L’Wren Scott, silk taffeta curtains stand out against cream walls and floors, and coordinate with a vintage suzani bedspread.
